Gregory the Theologian on Speculative Theology

Posted on 28 January 2010

Philosophize about the world or worlds; about matter; about soul; about natures endowed with reason, good or bad; about resurrection, about judgment, about reward, or the Sufferings of Christ. For in these subjects to hit the mark is not useless, and to miss it is not dangerous.

  • Nana says:

    Why is it not dangerous?

  • Chris Green says:

Because when one assumes that these things are true–which Gregory does–then speculation about how they are true is not a waste of time, for even a flawed theory can help to reinforce their truthfulness.

    • Nana says:

But what if the assumption is that they are false and how they are false?

Flawed theory can help reinforce truth as much as flawed man. No?
